So, the theatre has closed off the promenade again, and in the process has blocked access to the shop (again!)
Seems sensible, I hear you say, there does seem to be a lot of cars there. Hmm. You're right. Pedestrians do need to be protected.
I can just imagine the health and safety planning meeting that agreed this.
First person: 'the council is making us put up barriers when we have a fair because a pedestrian was hit by a car'.
Second person: 'they don't seem that worried when we have big lorries driving on the promenade'.
First person: 'I know! Let's direct all the pedestrians right in to where the traffic is coming from'
And yes folks, that's exactly what they do. Rather than directing pedestrians on a safe route in front of our shop and around the back of the pavillion theatre the sign sends them down to the main road and in to the traffic that is queueing to get on to the promenade.
Perhaps we should speak to them! We have done - every month from September to December. Each time we receive profuse apologies and assurances it won't happen again. Again today - full of apologies, but nothing's changed. To be honest it didn't have a major impact on us today with our winter opening times, but next month it will!
What will next month be like? Of course by then they will have realised the folly of their approach! They will direct pedestrians safely away from the traffic, and in the process allow access to our shop. Oops - there I go daydreaming again!
Ah, well. The campaign goes on! Watch this space…
